Safety has been a top priority in the automotive industry for many years now. With more than 6 million car accidents and more than 40,000 fatalities annually in the United States alone, introducing safety systems that would decrease the number of accidents and the likelihood of severe injuries is regarded as very important by consumers and manufacturers alike.
Indeed, a handful of technologies currently serve various safety applications in new cars. However, none of them provides the multitude of high performance safety features which 3DV's technology provides at a relatively low cost. Its core capability, capturing depth (the distance of objects from the camera) at high resolution and speed, can be used in several key automotive safety applications involving object recognition and detection.

Airbag Safety - A key in-cabin application is the safe deployment of airbags, triggered by the accurate real-time understanding of the dimensions and position of passengers (and especially head location) as detected by 3DV's technology regardless of moving background, dynamic light conditions and fast movement. Hence, airbag release can be optimally controlled to achieve the best possible outcome.
Fatigue Detection - The same in-cabin sensor can also warn drivers for signs of fatigue and low alertness levels, by detecting eyes closing, head turned to the back
seat etc. |
Collision Warning - At least as important and revolutionary are the out-of-cabin applications. A depth camera can easily complement the driver's eyes and provide accurate and timely warnings about potential collisions, pedestrians on the way or vehicles in blind-spots, even in poor lighting conditions. In addition, the information provided by the camera could be used in systems that replace the driver in some situations (e.g. driving into a parking spot).
