Tens of millions of webcams are sold every year, and instant messaging systems as well as the widely used web-based voice communication services (e.g. Skype) incorporate video-conferencing as a standard feature.

The background replacement feature is independent of the basic color video functionality of the webcam. Hence, using this feature does not affect image quality and can be done in conjunction with any image sensor, be it standard or state-of-the-art. 3DV's newly released prototype camera, the new ZCamTM (previously Z-Sense), uses a 1.3 Mega-pixel color imaging sensor.
Webcam users would also benefit from the unique gesture recognition capabilities provided by the technology, enabling them to control computer applications using any intuitive hand and head gesture. Other computer applications may include secure log-in based on 3D face detection.
